I had woke up this morning to the memory of Mike Jeffries and his 2006 statements on the fact that Abercrombie and Fitch has the gall to have a target audience and as such will not be carrying plus sizes for their female line.
This wouldn’t even be news if the world wasn’t still focused more on body-shaming of both the skinny and the overweight among us. It’s the turn of the underdog now. The world has been targeting the overweight with insults and hate for decades if not centuries and now it’s the turn of us underweighters to have a taste of our own medicine. That’s how Justice and equality works, ya know.
Let me make this clear: shaming of any form is wrong. Making anyone feel inferior for any reason is wrong! Skinny, overweight, whatever! The point here is that NOTHING that Mike Jeffries has said is wrong because it has nothing to do with body shaming. It has nothing to do with YOU!
This is nothing personal. He was simply being honest about how any successful business is run. Without a target audience it is impossible for anyone trying to run a business to be able to identify with the needs and desires of the general populace. It’s a flooded market out there! You don’t see plus-sized retailers sell skinny jeans, do you? Nobody seems to give a damn about that. There’s no hate for other retailers that are doing exactly the same thing. Plus sized folks just don’t shop there.
If we all focused a little more on loving and accepting ourselves and each other as who we are instead of going around either shaming or revenge-shaming each other and getting personally offended by a scientific fact of successful business conduct then maybe such bull will be lost to obscurity instead of becoming the scandals and front-page stories they become time and time again…
Or maybe Mike Jeffries has every right to like whatever the fxck he likes and so do the rest of us. Real men and women don’t make excuses for what they find attractive in each other and NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO BANG MEGAN FOX!
It’s about time we got over this.
Much love,
Zen Politics
