The Camel’s Back

Honestly, what can I say that hasn’t already been said about the now infamous still-employed mayor of the city of Toronto?

Perhaps I should begin by how appalling it is that it takes more than racism, sexism and blatant corruption including a full blown, well televised and scandal-soaked conflict of interest trial to get a politician out of office nowadays in Canada’s cultural capitol. Oh wait, no, it takes much more than that. The man has to be a raging embarrassment of an alcoholic too. No, no, we need more…he has to be a crack user with ties to criminals. No, even that’s not enough.

The morality of drug use or prostitution is not the issue that some, including the few remaining supporters of the mayor, are still trying to use to divert the discourse. Drug abuse is simply unfitting for any job, including one of public office and there’s no question that we are dealing here with an individual who possesses an addictive personality.

The man has been unwilling until recently to admit to if not seek help for his raging alcoholism. Is the question of whether or not this man is fit to make good decisions still on the table? As if him saving the city millions of dollars, which has been debunked the world over by now, is worth all of this embarrassment.

Toronto deserves a little better, and the one thing that the mayor’s supporters have in common with each other is the one thing they have in common with supporters of much more dangerous tyrants of public office. To these people, nothing Rob Ford can do will weaken their support. Their love is pure, all human decency and moral indignation be damned! Dear leader will care for us all. This same slavishness is what keeps dictatorships and many of the organized religions of the world in business.

Please, lets be done with this foolishness. It is a petty distraction at best and a poor attempt at promoting drug and prostitution legalization at worst. There is no future in politics, nothing to see here.

Much love,
Zen Politics
