Bad Music Makes You Stupid

Quick, have you heard? The mystery is over! There is an image on the internet that has proven it once and for all! Lowbrow top 40s music makes you suck at your SAT test!

Music preference is everything and so is a standardized intelligence testing! If you like rap, you’re gonna shoot up black people on the streets! Classical music lovers are our new presidents!

Quick, round up the lynch mob!

It is truly unfortunate as to how difficult it is to communicate sarcasm on a text-based medium, but I am sure that you, dear reader, have picked up on it anyway. I have faith that you are intelligent enough to know that correlation does not equal causation. I’m also confident that you are aware of societal, financial, and other environmental circumstances and how they may have much more to do with a person’s taste in music than their inherent ability to retain knowledge and information.

Music indeed is the soundtrack of life and taste in music is as complex as life itself. SAT scores are truly irrelevant to any scientific detection of knowledge and they are, at best, a poor and arbitrary gauge on a student’s logic.

The real tragedy has much less to do even with this meme, but more on the appallingly great ability for the ignorant among us to discriminate against one another. Only we are capable of taking something that scientifically takes away your pain and brings people together and use it as a divisive tool to an effectiveness rarely seen outside of fascist and theocratic dictatorships. How did this come to be?

Is music not all composed of low, mid and high frequencies and do we not all enjoy harmonic melodies? Are there not far more elements that music genres have in common than elements they don’t? Finally, can we stop this childish and discriminatory hate charade on each other based on styles of musical self-expression?

We have the ability, I assure you, to grow the hell up. It’ about time we did so.

Much love,
Zen Politics
